|
During the 10th conference of the Geoparks Network, that was held in Norway the 17th of September 2011, the regional nature park Bauges was distinguished as a geopark. Thus France will have a third geopark next to the geological nature reserve Haute-Provence in Digne (F) and the regional nature park Luberon . The worldwide network of geoparks , founded in 2000, contains nowadays 87 geoparks in 27 different countries. Since 2004, the network is attached to UNESCO. Some of its objectives are the protection of the geological diversity, the promotion of the geological heritage and its tourism development. |
The geological sites become official protected geological sites under certain conditions: they have to be of high scientific and pedagogical interest and as well archaeologically, historically and ecologically significant.
The regional nature park Bauges has its thematic focus on the protection of its geological features, a communication concerning the geological heritage and already began a collaboration with universities and scientific organisations.
