Around 150 visitors gathered on the construction site to witness Dr Söder placing the highly-decorative iron casket — known as the time capsule — as the first foundation stone for the Haus der Berge.
Dr Michael Vogel, the Director of the Berchtesgaden National Park said: "This is just the start. The Haus der Berge information centre will allow us to provide information, exhibit and encourage visitors to explore the only German national park in the Alps". The Director believes that environmental education, visitor management and recreation are central to the role of a national park, and is keen to pass on environmental knowledge and expertise: "There is no point in experts understanding how ecosystems work if they then keep that knowledge to themselves". The Haus der Berge centre is designed to pass that knowledge. Extending over approximately 17,000 m2, the information centre located near Berchtesgaden town centre will be the most modern facility in the Alps.
The visitor centre is scheduled to open in late 2012.
