In France, a national conservation strategy has been established to reintroduce ibex in their natural habitat before they disappear completely.
Having been absent from the Chartreuse area for many years, the ibex will now be returning to the mountain range. The Chartreuse Natural Regional Park is committed to maintaining biodiversity and has been selected as a reintroduction area. The ibex is talented rock climber, skilled at moving on the steep rocky slopes and lofty plateaux. We are confident that the animals will feel very much at home in the Chartreuse..

The idea of reintroducing ibex has been under discussion since the 1990s. Eliane Giraud, Presidant of Chartreuse Natural Regional Park explains that the reintroduction programme has a lot of local support and also ties in with national priorities: "There is a clear convergence between the Chartreuse Natural Regional Park management plan, the desire to enhance biodiversity as set out in the Park's Charter, and the Ministry of the Environment's desire to reintroduce the protected species in appropriate areas of the pre-Alps". The first 15 ibex will be released in the Hauts de Chartreuse reserve between Granier and la Dent de Crolles in spring 2010, followed by a further 15 being in spring 2011. "The programme is designed to establish a self-sustaining population of ibex in the Alps in the Hauts de Chartreuse Nature Reserve. In the longer term, the population should gradually expand across the whole of the Chartreuse range," according to the Nature Reserve's technical team. Starting this year, schoolchildren in the area will be involved in the ibex reintroduction and monitoring programme. |
