In conjunction with Austria's leading energy provider, Verbund , the Hohe Tauern National Park has launched a new project to teach schoolchildren about climate issues, energy and climate change.

The travelling school teaches children through games and more formal content about factors which affect the global and local climate. Pupils also learn about climate change and energy. The teachers are specially trained national park rangers who use a variety of teaching methods and an interdisciplinary approach.

The school is currently available to schoolchildren aged 9-13 in the National Park communities. The Hohe Tauern National Park aims to gradually expand activities to include other local authority areas and schoolchildren of all ages.

The president of the Friends of Hohe Tauern National Park , Werner Wutscher, hopes that the Climate School will "give the decision-makers of tomorrow an understanding of the factors and consequences linked to climate change and thereby enable them to contribute directly to climate protection."

The project, for the present limited to three years, started out with support from the Austrian electricity provider, Verbund, which is committed to tackling climate and energy issues and generates up to 90% of its power from clean energy sources such as hydroelectric power.
