Forty-nine teams from all eight Alpine countries and also Slovakia and Romania participated in the 14th Danilo Re Trophy in 2009 . The teams met for a friendly sporting event but also attended the seminar on the situation of large carnivores (bears, wolves and lynx) in the Alps.
This year's event was hosted by the Austrian Hohe Tauern National Park at Mittersill, near Salzburg/A, from 12th to 15th March 2009. The sporting event (slalom, shooting, ski mountaineering and cross-country skiing) was won by the German team from Berchtesgaden National Park, with second place going to Gran Paradiso National Park (Italy) and third place taken by the Swiss National Park.

As always, the sporting event also provided an opportunity for field staff to share their knowledge and examples of good practice. At their request, this year's seminar examined the subject of protecting and managing bears, wolves and lynxes.
Given their experience in this field, protected areas from the Carpathians were also invited to attend the event for the first time. The presentations covered a whole range of activities undertaken by wardens: monitoring, communication and relations with local residents, awareness-raising activities aimed at visitors and involvement in research programmes. See the seminar presentations.
The ALPARC "large carnivores" working group will continue to examine the subject: the group also held a meeting during the Trophy. View relevant news article .
