Walls block six cities in European Alpine countries – a campaign against habitat fragmentation
On the 20th of October a 13 meter long and three meter high wall will obstruct pedestrian paths in six different cities in European Alpine countries. The goal of the campaign is to raise public awareness on the problems caused to flora and fauna with the interruption of ecological corridors. Habitat fragmentation represents especially in the Alps a threat to biodiversity.

Stopp, you shall not pass! Each day plants and animals must experience this kind of situation. The increasing urban development of mountain areas causes habitats to shrink, fragment into smaller, isolated areas or disappear altogether. Barriers such as roads, villages or cities, railroads and walls are life-threatening to plants and animals. Since species have to migrate in order to find food, reproduce and to colonize new habitats, biotope fragmentation could lead to their extinction. In the Alps habitat fragmentation is an increasing problem that threatens biological diversity. The campaign “The Wall” was launched by the “Ecological Continuum Initiative” in order to raise public awareness on the importance of ecological networks in the Alps. In Ljubljana, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Milan an artificial wall will be erected on the 20th of October to symbolize habitat fragmentation as well as the difficulties and possible solutions to overcome such obstacles.
In Lyon, this manifestation will be organized the 19 of november.
