Today the effects of climate change are also obvious in the protected areas and the phenomenon is accelerated in the Alps compared to other European regions. Beyond the isolated preservation of habitats, which cannot guarantee a long term biodiversity conservation just by itself, the protected areas have to play the role of a model region: appropriate space management measures, promotion of soft mobility and ecological construction and especially the implementation of a true ecological network. This network will allow to pass from a static nature protection to a more dynamic protection based on an ecological continuum and facilitating species migration. This conference, which will take place in Berchtesgaden National Park (Germany) from 15th-16th October 2009, will deal with the importance of the implementation of such an ecological network in the Alps, as one solution to adapt to the climate change. Indeed, there won’t be a sustainable preservation of biodiversity without connectivity. The treated subjects will be the effects of climate change on biodiversity and especially on species migration, the creation of a Transalpine Ecological Network, the role of protected areas and the extension of this network towards an Pyrenean-Alpine-Carpathian ecological corridor.
