Over-reliance on the car
We use the car nearly every day: to go to work, to take the children to school, to go shopping, to go hiking, to go on holiday, even to go biking. But is it really necessary? Are there no other options? Of course there are. In recent years, local administrations, transport companies, NGOs and protected areas have been increasingly active in this arena. The range of alternatives to travelling by car is constantly expanding.

News from France

France is far from the most developed country in the Alps when it comes to sustainable mobility. Nevertheless, the number of new projects is on the increase. The Massif des Bauges Nature Park
has developed a new tool on its website
which allows protected area residents and visitors to use alternative means of transport. Do you want to go to a concert or a sporting event? Simply enter your point of departure and you can see the list of lift shares on offer. Perhaps you just want to go hiking in the park? You can find details on the website of the bus links that will take you to the starting point for your walk. The tool has been available for a few months now and the current priority is filling the gaps – there are still some areas with limited or no transport options.
Unfortunately, local authority activities are not enough in themselves: users also need to create their own tools. Car sharing is becoming ever more popular, but up now the biggest problem has been contacting the driver and/or passenger shortly before departure. The problem could now have been resolved: a new iPhone application called Comuto
allows users to view the lift shares on offer and contact the driver or passenger just before they set out. Please do remember not to use your mobile phone while driving though

What about other areas?
Sustainable mobility schemes are being developed throughout the Alps. We produced an overview of programmes and initiatives in 2008 (see below) and it would be useful if we could update our findings. Do you know about any initiatives in your park or close by? Please send your feedback to info@alparc.org
