|
The 10th Alpine Conference held in Evian, France from 10-12 March 2009 marked the end of the French presidency of the Alpine Convention. The French presidency had two priorities for the time in office: combating climate change through prevention and adaptation strategies and promoting sustainable tourism. France drew up an action plan designed to make the Alps a role model for regional responses to climate change. The climate change plan for the Alps was adopted by all eight Alpine states. Prizes were also awarded to commend outstanding projects and activities in the field of sustainable tourism. |
After two years of the presidency of the Alpine Convention, France is now taking over the presidency of the Ecological Network platform, an Alpine Convention working group that supports the creation of an Alpine ecological network, in accordance with the requirements set out in the Protocol on the conservation of nature and the countryside.
The platform's role includes overseeing and facilitating practical projects that reflect the spirit of the Convention, such as the ETC ECONNECT project and Ecological continuum project. ALPARC is involved in both projects, which are coordinated by the Protected Areas Task Force of the Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention; other partners include CIPRA International, ISCAR, the WWF together with a whole range of parks and nature reserves in the Alps.
The president of the platform is Ms. Marie-Odile Guth, Director General for the Environment and Sustainable Development in the French Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development.
