27/10/2010 - News from the network ALPARC New ALPARC International Steering Committee elected

 

The new International Steering Committee (ISC) was elected at the occasion of the ALPARC General Assembly held on October the 21st in Zernez in the Swiss National Park. Michael Vogel, director of Berchtesgaden National Park/D was re-elected at the ISC presidency for 2 more years. Vice-presidents are Philippe Traub and Bruno Stephan Walder.

Stop – no way through! A giant wall blocks the way of pedestrians in Zurich/CH, Vienna/A, Munich/D, Ljubljana/SI, Milan/I and Lyon/F. For animals, it’s the same every day: streets and settlements increasingly fragment their migration routes.

20/10/2010 - News from the network ALPARC Press release and announcement of the campaign “The Wall”, Ecological Continuum Initiative of WWF, CIPRA, ALPARC and ISCAR

Walls block six cities in European Alpine countries – a campaign against habitat fragmentation

On the 20th of October a 13 meter long and three meter high wall will obstruct pedestrian paths in six different cities in European Alpine countries: Ljubljana, Munich, Zurich, Lyon, Vienna and Milan. The goal of the campaign is to raise public awareness on the problems caused to flora and fauna with the interruption of ecological corridors. Habitat fragmentation represents especially in the Alps a threat to biodiversity.

On 4 October 2010, in glorious autumn weather, the Minister for the Environment of Bavaria, Dr Markus Söder, laid the cornerstone for the Haus der Berge (Mountain House) — the new environmental education and information centre in the Berchtesgaden National Park.

It is dued to open ending 2012
