Summit conference of international researchers of protected areas in Kaprun / Austria

More than 170 professionals, practitioners and students coming from 12 nations participated in the “4th Symposium of the Hohe Tauern National Park for Research in, for and about Protected Areas”, which took place at the Kaprun Castle, Salzburg / Austria from 17th – 19th September 2009. 40 researchers assured a high quality programme. 59 professional posters gave a good overview on actual research projects and concepts. A nice framework was realised with four professional excursions.
In cooperation with the Alpine Network of Protected Areas (ALPARC) and the International Scientific Committee on Research in the Alps (ISCAR), seven sessions were organised, focussing on the topics of biodiversity, (climate) change, ecological network, wildlife management, visitor management and participation, as well as, for the first time, the comparison of cultural history between bigger scale alpine protected areas (programme).
The 4th Symposium of Kaprun has shown that protected areas as well as the associated research will have to face new challenges. The protected areas have to ensure the feasibility of long-term research activities over decades on enduringly declared research sites, whereas the research has to strive towards the creation of a regional link, the execution of comparative studies and the elaboration of meta-analyses for each respective state of knowledge. This, in turn, will allow concretising the practical relevance of the many data and results, coming from the protected areas, for these protected areas again.
In order to ensure this transfer of know-how between scientific theory and applied praxis, a steady exchange beyond the limits of areas of expertise, nations and professional categories is essential. That’s why ALPARC, in cooperation with ISCAR, has established a “Research platform of protected areas” (ISCAR-P) during the last years, which fosters the international and interdisciplinary nature of research activities in protected areas within the alpine space.
The Kaprun Symposiums, which have already been organised by the Hohe Tauern National Park four times, are one of the three instruments of this new initiative, which actively and successfully support the necessary cooperation of researchers with regard to protected areas in the alpine arc.
