You are here: The Alps > Legendary scenery
The mountains of the Alps have many different faces: the limestone plateaus of the pre-Alps, mounds of schists, granite needles, moraine and scree, farmed terraces, marshes and wetlands, dark pine forests and vibrant larch forests, flower-strewn meadows and grassy pastures, lofty cliffs, breathtaking caves and valleys, tumbling waterfalls, roiling mountain streams and gentle rivers...
The variety of scenery is the product of geology, morphology and climate, but is also the result of over one thousand years of human habitation. That scenery has also produced a peerless variety of flora and fauna.
The fascination of the Alps owes as much to the more tranquil farmlands adjoining old villages as to the untamed landscapes and legendary peaks.
