The good news...

On 10th of august, The OFEV (Swiss Federal Office of Environment) announced the first proven presence of a wolves' couple in Switzerland, since more than one century (the wolf was exterminated in Switzerland at the end of the XIXth century). After the attacks on livestock at the end of July, we can suppose that they were accompanied by their cubs, according to the eaten quantity of meat.

… turns into bad news

Regarding the scale of damage done by the wolf, the Wallis canton announced, on the 3rd August, a special authorization to shoot one animal, in accordance to the Swiss Wolf Plan. The male was killed on 11th August in the morning at the Scex alpine pasture, near to Crans-Montana (Wallis).

We can only regret the very short “official” life of the first Swiss wolf couple – 1 day. In order to avoid the wolves' attacks in the future, the OFEV is currently working with the shepherds on the prevention measures for their herds.
