European Day of Parks 2011: Volunteering - Nature Needs You

2011 has been declared the European Year of Volunteering by the European Commission. Europarc takes this opportunity to promote the great work millions of volunteers do in protected areas around Europe every year. Therefore the theme of the European Day of Parks 2011 on 24th May is: ‘Volunteering - Nature Needs You ’

What is the European Day of Parks?

The European Day of Parks was launched by the EUROPARC Federation in 1999 with the aim of raising the profile of Europe's protected areas and generating public support for their aims and work. Last year over 180 parks in 20 European Countries organised over 400 events.

It is a great opportunity for protected areas across Europe to join forces and organize events for their benefit. These events will promote the European protected areas and strengthen their importance for society. They will reach not only the local population but also tourists visiting the park and in addition, the European Day of Parks will send a message to local, national and European politicians.

Participate with your protected area!

This year again, Europarc invites you to participate with interesting events in the week of the 23rd May. The day itself is the 24th May, chosen to commemorate the creation of Europe's first nine national parks in Sweden on this day in 1909. You are invited to add the day to your calendar and to organize some events and volunteering activities that give the local population and the visitors a new perspective on the work you do. Don’t forget to inform Europarc through the questionnaire available below to insure publicity about your activities.
