For the first time the thematic brochure of ALPARC extends its field of action also beyond the Alps. Due to the subject "Large carnivores in the protected areas" the tight cooperation with the Carpathian massif was practically indispensable.

In the course of the cooperation project with the CNPA (Carpathian Network of Protected Areas) a colloquium on the management, the public relations and the research of large carnivores was organised in Slovakia at the beginning of July 2009. The brochure “Large carnivores in the Alps and Carpathians: Living with the wildlife” was published to complete this meeting. Articles discussing the management, cohabitation and communication on these emblematic species reveal at the same time not only the inequalities in the distribution of bears, wolves and lynxes in Europe but also the common challenges that the two neighbouring massifs have to face in order to preserve these animals.

The meeting in Slovakia was financed by the German Ministry of Environment, the Principalities of Liechtenstein and Monaco as well as by the German foundation Heidehof. We would like to thank all these institutional partners for their continuous support of the cooperation with the Carpathians.

The brochure is available in English, German, French, Italian and Slovenian.
