INVITATION
It is our pleasure to invite you to the International Conference Biodiversity requires ecological connectivity - the alpine web of life – Results from the ECONNECT experience in Berchtesgaden, Germany, from 26 to 28 September 2011.
Enhancing ecological connectivity is a critical and timely challenge for EU environmental strategies and in the implementation process of the Alpine Convention. Since 2008, 16 European partners with support from the European Union's ETC Alpine Space Programme have worked towards maintaining and restoring a continuum consisting of inter-connected habitats in the alpine biosphere in order to increase the resilience of ecological processes and to enable adequate future provision of ecosystem services in the face of increasing human developed and disturbed landscapes.
The conference will provide a profound insight into the role of an intact alpine ecological continuum, will discuss legal and methodological barriers to the establishment and enhancement of alpine connectivity and will highlight the solutions developed and implemented within the ECONNECT project.

During the first day of the conference, with the support from invited international speakers, we will investigate alpine connectivity and the respective socio-economic and political implications and benefits of maintaining, enhancing and restoring connectivity. The results from ECONNECT will be summarized and the most significant recommendations will be presented and discussed. The second day of the conference will provide numerous talks and discussion venues dealing with the specific results, methods from the alps-wide to the local scale. A highpoint will most certainly be the presentation of the specific implementation measures from the ECONNECT pilot regions. The last day of the conference will provide an excursion into the unique and stunning alpine mountain landscape of the Berchtesgaden National Park and ECONNECT pilot region to witness and discuss the local project implementation measures. |

Particular care has been taken by the organizers to provide numerous possibilities for discussion and exchange during the conference in order to facilitate new and exciting partnerships, investigate potential future projects and socialize with colleagues and friends.
